sharing life

This week in church planting…

I’m in Orlando for the Exponential Conference that brings thousands of church planters from all over the US together. I’m very excited about some of my breakouts, but more excited to talk with guys who are traveling the same journey as we are.

Yesterday was amazing as I got to hang out with some pastors who are four months into their plant here in Orlando – and there is nothing like learning from those who are ahead of you.

So, here is the schedule for the rest of the week, pray God brings people into my path that I would not normally meet and that I could be an encourager as I am being encouraged.

God is never better than in the waiting

This week in church planting…

This was supposed to be yesterday’s post, but new MacBook Pro‘s threw my Tuesday morning into high gear and I missed a little blogging time.

Which, of course, is okay because my job at Apple has a turned into an amazing growth experience in and of itself. I have a fantastic management team that I get to work for and the way Apple does leadership development and training has greatly shaped my views of both.

Other than keeping up with that world, Emily and I have been anxiously awaiting the birth of our daughter… in… T-4 weeks! And we’re so excited.

Things have also been moving forward on our church planting vision as well. This week has been filled with preparations for the Exponential Conference in Orlando next week. Exponential is the largest gathering of church planters we could find and I’m looking forward to networking with guys who are ahead of us, and with us, on this journey. But I’ll post more about that soon.

Last week we were able to hear JR Vassar from Apostles NYC share his story of how God prepared and called him to the city. It was great to hear lesons from someone who left the DFW area and started an urban church in New York.

I also had the privilege before that to join a staff meeting at Watermark Community Church in Dallas. It was an incredibly powerful to sit with their staff worshipping, praying and listening to the stories of how God is moving in their community. They are deeply transparent and have built their church around relationships – both things which we hope to emulate.

God has continued to surround us with amazing leaders and churches who want to see His kingdom expanded and are more than generous to pour into us as we develop this vision.

I would have never charted out this much prep time to launch a church, but with every passing week I’m more grateful for it. One pastor described his planting experience as “trying to build an airplane in the air.” Time to pray, plan and grow is invaluable and we are not wasting a minute of it.

We appreciate your prayers as God shapes and grows us. And we are reminded each day that God is never better than in the waiting.

consistency

This really was an unbelievable fire – shed full of fertilizer, wooden pallets and fuel (yep, fuel – you can see the barrels if you look closely). Fortunately no one was hurt.

I took this shot when I was a senior in high school. I was a photographer for our school yearbook and happened to have my camera with me when I saw the fire. It’s probably the best photograph I’ve ever taken. Of course, what no one back then saw was what went in to that shot.

I had been studying photography for four years… and sacrificing to buy good camera equipment. I spent the afternoon at this fire – probably burned through eight rolls of film. And after all of that I got one good shot.

A lot of the times I look at other people who do something amazing and forget how much work went in to what they do. Because I don’t see the training they’ve done. The sacrifices they’ve made. The time they pour in to what they’re good at. All I see is one glimpse of one moment in their life.

Which makes me wonder if I’ve given up on some things too soon.

That I haven’t stayed dedicated to the things that matter – because no one else sees them.

That I’ve looked around myself, and instead of getting encouraged by people, I let jealously of their success discourage me.

And I quit before things get good.

So maybe it’s time we do an inventory.

What are you doing now that is going to be something you do great later?

What have you stopped doing that you should start doing again?

What’s something that no one is applauding now, but if you stick to it could change the world?

Sometimes the little things done consistently over long periods of time make the biggest differences.
