new york city
With a metro population over 18 million people – eight million of which dwell within the five boroughs of the city - New York City is a huge city.
But it is just one city, and in the grand scheme one city is pretty small – but the small impacts the big.
People who live in large urban cultural centers, occupying jobs in the arts, business, academia, publishing, the helping professions and the media, tend to have a disproportionate impact on how things are done in our culture. – Tim Keller
It’s a city that makes a huge impact on our world and culture. Everyone is a contributor. Everyone shapes everything.
Of the 1.5 million people living on the island of Manhattan, 0.5% are of the evangelical tradition.
0.5 percent.
Half of one percent of the leaders in the most populous city in the western hemisphere – leaders who shape nearly every aspect of our culture, from Madison Avenue, to the Fashion District, to Wall Street – 0.5% are experiencing life like God designed them to.
Something has to change.
The vibe of the city should be set by a people walking in the ways of the Lord. The name and renown of God should reverberate from the most influential city on earth to every corner of lost hope and desperation.
The church of the city should incite and foster relationships with Jesus Christ, and work for measurable change among the oppressed. It is time to bring the freedom that is found in relationship to the city. It is time to live where mission is the movement of love. It is time to form community that is the context for faith.
It is time for change.
